The First 10 Walks

Why this exists. The harness removes your dog's leverage the moment the lead goes tight. That's control. Loose-lead walking is a habit, and habits come from repetition. Ten short walks is usually enough to see the habit start. If it isn't, you still have most of your 60 days.

Before walk one: the fit

  1. Loosen all four sliders. Put it on, clip both buckles.
  2. Neck straps first, then chest, then belly. Both sides even.
  3. Two fingers flat under every strap.
  4. Attach a fixed-length lead to the front ring.

Walks 1–3: quiet streets, ten minutes

  • Pick a boring route: your own street at a quiet time, not the dog park.
  • Walk. The moment the lead tightens, stop. The front clip will already be turning your dog towards you. Wait for slack, say "yes", take three steps, repeat.
  • Reward every five to ten steps of slack with a small treat or a word. Yes, that many.
  • Stop at ten minutes, even if it's going well. Then let them sniff as the reward.
  • After five minutes of the first walk, re-check the belly strap. Sliders settle.

Walks 4–6: add one distraction

  • Same route, a busier time, or the edge of the oval. Not the beach yet.
  • Same rule: tight lead means stop. Slack lead means forward.
  • If your dog spins to face you, that's the harness doing its job. Take a step back, get slack, go again.

Walks 7–10: the real walk

  • Shared path, then the dog beach on-lead area, then the coastal track.
  • Bikes and runners: before they reach you, shorten the lead, hand on the top handle, step off the path, reward the sit. Then carry on.
  • If it all falls apart, go back one stage for two walks. That's normal.

When to switch to the back clip

Once the lead stays slack on a normal walk for a week, try the back clip on quiet stretches. Switch back to the front clip the moment pulling returns.
